Approximately fifty vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Officers state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The substance had been drawn in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then found multiple other marked vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state initial examinations suggest the fluid was probably human blood.
"Currently there is no lead as to its origin; officials are currently not informed of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were attempting "to resolve the case" and have requested to the residents for tips.
A senior political figure said the vandalism rendered him without words and needed to be solved quickly.
"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist attack five years ago," he stated on social media, recalling the death of nine victims by a gunman aiming at people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
